Volunteers prepare for Software Freedom Day ------------------------------------------- Monash local Daniel Jitnah and a team of volunteers are preparing for Software Freedom Day on 18 September, 11am - 4pm at the State Library of Victoria. Software Freedom Day is an event held all over the world to celebrate and raise awareness of free software and open source software. The event is free of charge and will feature a range of talks, workshops and activities suitable for all ages and abilities. Melbourne has hosted an event for the last five years with the 2010 event looking to be bigger and better than ever. Since the beginning of the year Daniel and the team been have been busily organising the event. "We all rely on computer software to some degree. Software Freedom Day is a great chance to learn about how to be in control of your computing, rather than being restricted by an external party." Mr Jitnah said. "One important aspect of this is free software; software that you have the freedom to use for any purpose, study, modify and share. Other broad themes of the day will be trust, privacy and co-operation. I'm really looking forward to hearing Rami Olwan speak about his work with Creative Commons." "We've been working hard to create an event that will be fun for all ages. The event is free of charge, so I invite you to please come along with family and friends." As an ex-teacher and local business owner, Mr Jitnah is a Member of Linux Users of Victoria (LUV) and enjoys helping people get started with free software. He's a regular participant of LUV's Beginner Workshops. He'll also be speaking at Software Freedom Day about "Using Open Source Software at Home".
